NORFOLK, Va. - Keyon Carter scored a career-high 19 points and Old Dominion University held on for a 74-71 win over Dayton on Saturday evening at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

Old Dominion (8-2) built its largest lead of the game at 64-56 on a pair of Kent Bazemore free throws, but Dayton (7-3) fought right back and went on a 9-0 run to take a 65-64 lead on a layup by Chris Wright.

The Monarchs came right back to tie the score on a free throw by Carter and took the lead the next time down the court on a layup by Carter.

ODU pushed the lead to five with a bucket by Frank Hassell and a foul shot by Ben Finney, but a three-pointer by Paul Williams pulled Dayton to within two.

After the Monarchs pushed the lead back to three with a pair of free throws by Darius James, the Flyers once again cut the lead to one with a three by Chris Johnson.

Frank Hassell scored on a fastbreak layup with seven seconds remaining to put ODU up three and Josh Parker's last ditch three-pointer came up short to secure the win.

Trian Iliadis kept the Monarchs in the game in the first half, scoring 12 of his career-high 15 points in the half.

The Flyers put together a 15-7 lead but ODU stormed back with a 13-0 to take a 20-15 lead, nine of those points coming from Iliadis.

The game remained close throughout the rest of the half, as Carter gave ODU the halftime lead with a three-pointer with three seconds to go.

Carter pulled down nine boards to go with his career high 19 points while Hassell added 12 points and nine rebounds. Bazemore chipped in with 11 points.

Chris Johnson led Dayton with 24 points and nine rebounds while Paul Williams had 17. Johnson was nine-for-13 from the floor, while Williams was five-of-six from the field as well as from three-point range. Chris Wright scored 11 points and hauled down a game high 11 rebounds.

ODU shot .379 (22-58) from the floor while UD was .417 (25-60). The Monarchs outrebounded the Flyers, 44-33, but it was the Monarchs .821 (23-28) from the freethrow line that was key, while Dayton hit 10 treys.

The win gives ODU victories over three of the top four teams in the Atlantic-10. The Monarchs defeated Xavier for the Paradise Jam Championship and Richmond at the Constant Center earlier in the year.

The Monarchs break for exams before returning to action on Dec. 23rd at the Constant Center against Presbyterian.
