Arni Arnason Sets Nike Cup Record in 100 Breast

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Junior Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) captured the Nike Cup title in the 100 breast and set a Nike Cup record as well in his NCAA "B" cut time of 53.92 in day two action at the 2010 Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup at Koury Natatorium.

Arnason was one of six Monarch finalists and one of two ODU swimmers to capture an NCAA "B" cut time on day two action.

Both the men and women sit in seventh place overall.

On the women's side host North Carolina still leads the competition (1094 points) followed by South Carolina (377 points) and Duke (347). The Lady Monarchs are seventh with 155 points.

On the men's side, the Tar Heels also lead the way (993 points) followed by South Carolina (377 points) and the Naval Academy (456.5 points). The Monarchs are in seventh with 116.5 points.

Arnason wasn't the only ODU finalist in the 100 breast. Fellow Icelandic Olympian teammate Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) claimed second place in the event with an NCAA "B" time and ODU record of 1:01.15. Haraldsdottir resets her own Lady Monarch top time surpassing her previous top time of 1:01.32 recorded last season.

A pair of Monarchs were also featured in the consolation brackets of the 100 breast. Senior Josh Kinas (Reston, Va.) placed 15th overall (58.16), while Lsenior auren Fiskus (Yorktown, Va.) took 18th (1:06.45).

Sophomore Kimberly Rasleigh (Sydney, Australia) made two event finals appearances on day two. She took eighth in both the 400 IM (4:23.63) and 100 back (57.66). Her 400 IM time was just .22 seconds off the Lady Monarch record and puts her name second on the all-time top times list in the event.

Joining Rashleigh in the 100 back finals was two-time CAA Champion April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.). Barrientos hit the wall in a time of 55.63 to take fourth. Elizabeth Huggin also swam in the 100 back in the consolation bracket, placing 16th overall (58.09).

Sophomore Jason Brame (Lynchburg, Va.) also made a finals appearance for the Monarchs in the 400 IM. Brame claimed sixth in his time of 3:59.27 in the fourth fastest time in the Monarch records.

The 100 fly saw three Monarchs swimming in the consolation brackets. On the women's side sophomores Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.) placed 12th (56.84) and Ashley Luchsinger (Va. Beach, Va.) finished in 19th (57.06), while for the men, freshman Sidni Hoxha (Tirane, Albania) took 23rd (51.81).

A pair of Lady Monarchs swam in the 200 free consolation bracket. Freshman Abby Vance (Raleigh, N.C.) swam to a 17th place finish (1:53.13), while junior Emma Forbes (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) came in 20th overall (1:54.13).

The Monarchs and Lady Monarchs wrap up competition at the Nike Cup tomorrow.
