UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Old Dominion University soccer monarchs head to Penn State to take on Penn State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Monarchs defeated the defending champs Virginia 1-0 on Thursday in the first round. Freshman Alex Vaughan scored the only goal of the match in the 62nd minute off an assist from Chris Harmon
ODU was outshot 18-8 but Monarchs goalkeeper Evan Newton delivered his sixth shutout of the season, stopping four shots.
Old Dominion enters its second round match with a 10-6-2 record. Harmon leads the squad with six goals and 15 points. Jordan LeBlanc is second on the team with five points, and 12 points.
Newton has started 17 games in goal for ODU, posting 68 saves and a 0.90 goals against average.
Penn State is 13-7-1 on the year and is led offensively by Corey Hertzog who has 17 goals and 39 points on the season. Matheus Braga is second on the team with 25 points and leads PSU with 15 assists.
Brendan Birmingham has seen the most action in goal, appearing in 12 games, making 35 saves and posting a 1.37 GAA.
The match will feature a contrast in styles, as the Monarchs have allowed just 16 goals on the year and have produced eight shutouts, while Penn State has scored 41 goals and been shut out just once.
ODU leads the all-time series 3-1, including a 2-1 win over Penn State last season at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
