CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Alex Vaughan scored in the 62nd minute to give Old Dominion University a 1-0 lead and goalkeeper Evan Newton made it stand as the soccer Monarchs knocked off the defending champions Virginia Thursday night in Charlottesville.
On the game-winner, Chris Harmon sent a through ball to Vaughan who struck it with his left foot into the back of the net from 10 yards out.
For Vaughan, it was his fourth goal of the year and Harmon's third assist of the season.
The Cavaliers outshot ODU 7-1 in the first half, but only one shot was on goal and that was turned aside by Newton.
"It was a very hard fought game in a tough place to play, but exactly what we expected," ODU head coach Alan Dawson said. "We did a great job as a young team, especially in the second half. We gave a courageous effort and got the win in the end."
The Monarchs produced more offense in the second half with seven shots, two apiece by Harmon and Vaughan.
Newton came up big in the second half with three saves, all three coming after ODU took the lead.
With the win, ODU improve to 7-9 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and won a first round game for the third=straight time they have reached the NCAA Tournament.
ODU now moves onto the second round to play at Penn State on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m.
