The Monarchs wrap up the 2010 season Saturday in Durham, North Carolina against N.C. Central. The Monarchs enter the game with a 7-3 mark in 2010 and are riding a four-game win-streak dating back to October 23rd and its 34-20 victory over Georgia State. Old Dominion sports a 16-5 overall mark since kicking off football last season.
SENIOR DAY:
Eleven seniors will be suiting up for the Monarchs for the final time on Saturday. The 11 seniors, who were honored at home last weekend prior to the home finale against VMI, have helped build and establish the ODU program. Those seniors are:

HOME SWEET HOME:
Old Dominion improved its record to 4-3 this season at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium with the 45-28 win over VMI last Saturday. All three losses in 2010 have come at the hands of teams currently featured in the Top 25 including #6/6 Williams & Mary, #20/21 Jacksonville, and #23/23 Cal Poly. The Monarchs are 10-4 all-time on their home turf
ON THE ROAD:
ODU is 6-1 all-timeon the road in their young history and 3-0 in 2010 thanks to its 28-14 win over Hampton three weeks ago. In their inaugural season, the Monarchs went 3-1 on the road with wins at Jacksonville (28-27), Savannah State (38-17), and VMI (42-35). The lone setback away from the friendly confines of Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium was a 34-29 loss at Fordham.
D-D-DEFENSE:
Cornerback T.J. Cowart's (Va Beach, Va.) 13 tackles in last Saturday's win against VMI ties for not only the most for a Monarch this season, but ties the record for the most stops by a Monarch defender in a game. Cowart surpasses the previous season-high of 11 held by Cowart himself in the 35-21 win at Monmouth and Craig Wilkins versus Cal Poly in a 50-37 loss to the nationally ranked squad. Cowart ties the mark also held by former Monarch linebacker Mycheal McJunkins recorded in last year's 42-35 win at VMI. Additionally, the nine solo tackles Cowart had against the Keydets are the most by a Monarch in a single game.
WELCOMING A FELLOW NEWCOMER:
Head coach Bobby Wilder has announced the addition of start-up program Charlotte to the Football Monarchs' schedule in 2013 and 2014. The 49ers, who will begin their program in 2013 will travel to Norfolk and Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium on September 21st 2013 in their inaugural season, while September 6th, 2014 will serve as the return date to "Queen City" for the Monarchs
MOST POINTS:
The 57 points scored by the Monarchs on November 6th against Savannah State were the most in the 20-game history of the program. The previous high was 49 in the 49-17 victory over Virginia Union back on September 12th, 2009. The previous high against a Division I opponent was 44 in the 44-13 win at Campbell on September 11th, 2010.
OPENING WITH A BANG:
And no, we're not talking about the howitzer you hear being shot off before the Monarchs run onto Foreman Field. Old Dominion has scored on its opening drive in five of its games this season and 12 times in the 21 game history of the program.
MILESTONE ALERT:
Running back Mario Crawford became the second Monarch to accumulate 1,000 or more rushing yards last Saturday against VMI with his 59 yards on 13 carries against the Keydets. Crawford now has 1050 career rushing yards in his two years as a Monarch. Thomas DeMarco was the first Monarch to reach the milestone and currently has 1320 rushing yards under his belt.
PASSING LAST YEAR'S NUMBERS:
With 122 passing yards against the Pirates on October 30th, redshirt junior quarterback Thomas DeMarco (Palm Desert, Calif.) surpassed last year's total of 1921 yards. To date, the redshirt junior quarterback has total 2470 yards in the air. Additionally the three touchdown passes against the Keydets last weekend brought his season total to 22, surpassing last year's mark of 21 touchdown thrown.
AMONG THE TOP:
The Monarchs enter Saturday's game ranked third in the nation in kickoff return after leading the nation to straight weeks. ODU is averaging 25.90 yards per return. Rookie Colby Goodwyn (Hampton, Va.), who will miss the final final three games of the season due to an elbow injury suffered at Hampton back on October 30th, ranks ninth among all FCS kickoff returners averaging 29.83 yards per return.
PUNTING STATS:
Monarch punter Jonathan Plisco (Newport News, Va.), briefly dropped to No. 2 in the national rankings during week nine, but climbed up to back where he belongs and is back at No. 1 for the second consecutive week. Through the Monarchs' 10 games this season, the redshirt sophomore is averaging 44.98 yards per punt. On the season, Plisco has totaled 1672 yards on 37 punts with 15 of them reaching a distance of 50 yards or more.
NUMBERS GAME:
With three touchdown passes against VMI last weekend, quarterback Thomas DeMarco (Palm Desert, Calif.) brought his career touchdown pass number to 43. The redshirt junior signal caller also has 25 career rushing touchdowns under his belt. He is currently ranked eighth in the nation in total offense at 289.80 yards a game.
SUCCESS BACK-TO-BACK:
Building upon the success of a 9-2 inaugural campaign as the winningest FCS start-up program, year two of Monarch football has proven to be just as successful.
ODU currently stands at 7-3 overall heading into its final game this weekend at North Carolina Central. A victory over the Eagles on Saturday would match the second best second year program over the last few years, although many could argue with a slate full of FCS opponents and all three losses coming in winnable games against teams ranked among the Top 25, the Monarchs are the winningest start-up first year and second year program in the books.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers kicked off its first season of football with a 6-5 mark in 2003, while year number two in 2004 was a historic one, as the Chanticleers captured the Big South Conference title in just their second year of play, posting a perfect 4-0 mark in league play and 10-1 record overall.
A notable difference, however, from the Monarchs' year two schedule and the Chanticleers' second season schedule is that ODU will have played a Division I FCS program in all 11 contests, while Coastal Carolina's slate featured three Division II squads.
South Florida, whose second year mark of 8-3 is what the Monarchs are aiming to match, played as an independent in the FCS during year two in 1998. The South Florida schedule in 1998 featured wins over Liberty, Elon, Charleston Southern, Morehead State, the Citadel, as well as Slippery Rock and Valparaiso. Losses for the Bulls were to the national runner-up Georgia Southern, 20th-ranked Hofstra, and Western Kentucky. The Bulls would later transition to the FBS in 2000, the Bulls' fourth year of existence.
Robert Morris was one of the winningest start-ups over the last handful of years going 7-1-1 in their first season back in 1994. The second year of Colonial football had the squad going 6-4 playing a schedule similar to its first year with a mix of FCS, Division II, and Division III programs.
Next on the list of success in year two of football would be Bryant. Going just 3-6 in 1999, the Bulldogs improved to .500 in the second year, but played a schedule primarily filled with Division II & III programs.
Jacksonville, Florida Atlantic, and FIU, other schools to start-up football recently, all finished their second years as varsity programs below .500.
