RICHMOND, VA-- Old Dominion and VCU battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie Wednesday night at the Sportsbacker Stadium. ODU is now 5-3-2 overall and 1-1-2 in the CAA, while VCU is 5-1-4 overall and 2-0-2 in the CAA.
The Monarchs got on the scoreboard first with a goal by freshman Tim Hopkinson on a freekick from about 25-yards out. It was Hopkinson's first career collegiate goal.
VCU got the equalizer by Jake van Yahres, the CAA's Player of the Week who hit a shot into the upper left hand upper corner of the net from 22 yards out.
VCU had a couple of chances in the first half as CJ Gehin-Scott had break a way but ODU senior Evan Newton made the save at the 35-minute mark. Jason Johnson threatened with a shot on goal with 24 seconds left in first half and Newton again made the stop. In the second half with a little more than five minutes left in regulation VCU's Jason Johnson missed wide on a a break-a-way shot.
ODU countered with about three minutes left but Gideon Asante's shot was wide. ODU junior defender Tommy Webb also made some big stops . With 4:36 left in the second extra period, VCU's Jake Van Yahres shot on goal in front of the net was saved by Newton.
ODU's Newton had four saves on the night, while VCU's Gabriel Rodriguez had two.
The Monarchs return to action when they travel to Wilmington, NC to take on the defending CAA Champion Seahawks of UNCW on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
