Asante Gets CAA And National Honor -ODU Travels to VCU On Wednesday

NORFOLK, VA-- ODU freshman forward Gideon Asante (Sunyani, Ghana) has been namedCAA Rookie of the Week and College Soccer News National Team of the Week. The Monarchs return to action Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against VCU at the SportsbackersStadium in Richmond, Va.

Asante scored both goals in the Monarchs 2-1 victory over then second-ranked NorthCarolina last week.

VCU is 5-1-3 overal and 2-0-1 in the CAA. The Rams defeated both Georgia State andGeorge Mason on the road last week. CJ Gehin-Scott leads the Rams with five goals,two assists and 12 points. Yoram Mwila has three goals, and Jake Van Yahres hastwo goals and two assists. Van Yahres is this week's CAA Player of the Week.

In the net, Gabriel Rodriguez has five shutouts with a 0.46 goals against average.He leads the CAA in that category.

ODU leads the series with the Rams, 22-8-4. Last year, the Monarchs defeated VCU,in Norfolk, 2-1 in overtime.

ODU is led by Chris Harmon with three goals, two assists for eight points. Asanteis second with three goals, one assist and seven points. Yannick Smith also hastwo assists. Harmon and Asante are tied for ninth in the CAA in goals.

Evan Newton has four shutouts with a 0.60 goals against average. He is second in the CAA in that category. Newton leads the league in save percentageat .868.
