FOR RELEASE - SATURDAY, OCT. 30, 11:30 PM23 ODU basketball games to be aired this season
NORFOLK - Old Dominion University's men's and women's basketball programs will be featured in 23 broadcasts this year, including six potential games on the ESPN family of networks, 16 games on the Comcast family of regional networks, including Comcast SportsNet and The Comcast Network, and a locally produced package of nine games.
"Program visibility and broadcast exposure is the name of the game these days for high profile basketball conferences and programs," says athletic director Dr. Wood Selig. "Typically a program `plays its way on TV' through its competitive success and program brand recognition. The strong TV presence of ODU basketball this year, especially on ESPN platforms, is a tribute to the outstanding performances of our basketball coaches and student-athletes at ODU."
"The comprehensive broadcast coverage will assist us in recruiting, growing our fan base, and telling our compelling story surrounding our successful basketball programs," Selig continues."The CAA continues to grow and expand the overall broadcast presence of our basketball product. None of this extensive coverage would be possible without the dynamic leadership of Commissioner Tom Yeager and Deputy Commissioner Ron Bertovich.
The Monarchs will be featured on ESPNU on Jan. 13 at Drexel, Jan. 22 against VCU, Jan. 29 against Towson, Feb. 24 at James Madison, and have potential wildcard games on ESPN or ESPN 2 at VCU on Feb. 12 and the home Bracket buster contest on either Feb. 19 or 20. The Comcast Sports Network (CSN) and The Comcast Network (TCN) family of regional networks will produce nine ODU men's and women's games, in addition to carrying many of ODU's locally produced games.
WSKY (SKY4) will produce a local package that includes men's games with Georgetown on Nov. 12, Richmond, and Dayton, women's games at William and Mary and home with VCU and carry the Monarchs' game at Missouri. Cox (11) will produce the Lady Monarchs home contest with Tennessee and road game at VCU, in addition to producing the Monarchs game at William and Mary. Providing play by play on these games is John Castleberry , with Cal Bowdler as color analyst.
"It is important that we invest financially in our own local television presence. We are fortunate to have such solid local partners in WSKY and Cox Communications. Through their innovation and creativity we have greatly expanded our TV presence throughout the region including many high profile away games that will be of considerable value to all local Monarch hoop fans," adds Selig.
In total, 56% of all Monarchs contests will be televised. Additionally, all Monarch and Lady Monarch home games are video streamed through www.odusports.com.The following is a comprehensive list of ODU televised games and its coverage areas and networks.
