POWELL'S POINT, NC--East Carolina junior Harold Varner shot a blistering 65 to finish at 196 and 20 under par to lead the Pirates to the first annualOld Dominion/Outerbanks Collegiate Golf title at the Kilmarlic Golf Club.
The Pirates as a team finished 37 under par for the 54-hole event and won by 23 strokes over second place Richmond.
ECU had four players in the final top 10. Joining individual champion Varner were David Watkins with a fourth place at 209, Zach Edmondson and Ryan Eibnertied for ninth with 213's. Varner was consistent throughout the tournament shooting 65-66-65. Matthew Broome of Furman finished second with a 205 andJohn Duthie of Towson was third at 208. Varner led the event in par three (2.80) ,par four (3.71), par five scoring (4.33) as well as 21 total birdies. J.B. Murphyof Furman led the tournament with three eagles and Duthie of Towson led with 41 pars.
Host Old Dominion finished 14th with an 893 led by freshman John Dawson (Chesapeake, VA.) who tied for 26th and senior Sam Wall (Essex,England) tied for 30th at 219. Dawson fired a 72 in today's final round. Wall tied for fifth in birdies with 13, while Neil Henderson (North Berwick, Scotland) and freshman James Brockington (Oxfordshire, England) , last week'sCAA Golfer of the Week were 10th in pars with 35.
