POWELLS POINTS, NC--East Carolina shot 270 and leads Liberty by six strokes after one round of the ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate, sponsored by Pepsi. The tournament is being held at the Kilmarlic Golf Course. Individually, Max McKay of Liberty and Harold Varner of ECU are tied for first after shooting 65 in the first round.
The Pirates have three players in the top six of the tournament. Joining Varner are Ryan Eibner (tied for Fourth) with a 67, Zach Edmondson (tied for sixth) with a 68, and David Watkins (tied for 17) with a 70. Liberty's Robert Karlsson is tied for sixth with a 68.
Richmond is third with a 278, followed by William and Mary in fourth at 280, the University of Louisville fifth at 283 and Furman sixth at 285.
The Monarchs are 14th and were led by Sam Wall who is tied for 38th with a 73 and freshman Preston Leigh who is tied for 32nd after firing a 72. Furman's J.B. Murphy led the tournament with two eagles, while Matthew Broome of Furman and Harold Varner of ECU had eight birdies today. Leight was tied for fourth with 13 pars.
