NORFOLK, Va. - VCU scored two goals in a six minute span in the first half and hung on for a 2-1 win Friday night at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
VCU (6-7-4, 2-5-2) got on the board first in the 11th minute. Carly Edgcomb had a throw-in that was tapped back to her by Jordyn Rolling before Edgcomb sent a cross to the opposite side where Taryn Cressy knocked it to the right side of the goal past the ODU keeper to put the Rams up 1-0.
The Rams came back just six minutes later when Edgcomb sent a deep cross to the left side of the goal that Azania gathered and shot into the back of the net to give VCU a 2-0 lead.
Old Dominion fought back, in the 32nd minute Kelly Evans sent a through ball to the right to Ashlee Coutu, who beat VCU's keeper who came out to cut her angle, on a shot inside the left post. The goal was Coutu's second of the year and the fifth assist of the season for Evans.
The Lady Monarchs stayed on the attack in the second half. In the 68th minute Kirstin Walker gave Jocelyn Weidner a pass in the box but her shot sailed just high.
Ten minutes later, Kate Kelly sent a cross pass from the right side that was just out reach of an open Coutu.
VCU held a 16-11 advantage in shots and owned an 8-3 lead in corner kicks.
Lauren Hutchinson and Cressy led VCU with three shots apiece while Coutu had three for the Lady Monarchs.
Megan Lynch picked up the win in goal for the Rams, making four saves. Laura Bush made her first start of the year in goal for ODU, making three saves while Brianna Alvarado played the second half and also made three stops.
The Lady Monarchs finish their open portion of the schedule on Sunday as they host James Madison at 1 p.m. Before the game the Lady Monarchs will honor seniors Kirstin Walker, Ashley Kukura, Kelsey Williams and Alyssa Pietrobono.
