Women's Tennis Opens Qualifying Play of ITA Regional

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University women's tennis competed in the opening round of the USTA/ITA regional on Thursday, hosted by ODU.

ODU picked up its first win of the regional when Joanna Dobrowolska and Melissa Esnal Olguin teamed up in doubles competition to defeat Jordan Batey and Theresa Stangl of Temple, 8-2.

In ODU's second doubles match of the day, Arina Alilueva and Diana Ivanova fell 8-5 to Georgetown's Madeline Jaeger and Vicky Sekeley. The ODU tandem battled back from a 5-4 deficit to make the score 6-5, but dropped the final two sets for the final margin.

The Lady Monarchs' final pairing, Juliana Pires and Nika Khmolovska dropped a hard fought 9-8 match to the Pittsburgh duo of Elizabeth Adams and Gabi Catanzariti. Down 7-6, ODU fought back to force a tiebreaker, but weren't able to complete the comeback.

Freshman Arina Alilueva was the first match of the day for the Lady Monarchs, as she dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Virginia Tech's Emily Lauten.

Melissa Esnal Olguin jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Joanna Matuszczyk of Richmond, but couldn't hold on, falling 6-4, 6-2.

Freshman Nika Khmolovska rounded out the freshman trio, dropping a 6-0-, 6-2 match to Geroge Washington's Mimi Hamling.

Joanna Dobrowolska and Diana Ivanova will hit the courts tomorrow for the Lady Monarchs.
