NORFOLK, Va. - Kate Kelly gave Old Dominion University women's soccer an early lead but it wasn't enough as the Lady Monarchs fell to No. 23 Hofstra 3-1, Sunday afternoon at ODU Soccer Stadium.

Just over six minutes in Old Dominion (4-9-1, 2-6) got the scoring started. Victoria Johnson threw in the ball from the left side into the box and Kelly headed just inside the left post and over the Hofstra (14-1, 8-0) keeper's head to stake ODU to the 1-0 lead.

Old Dominion kept the attack on as Johnson fired a shot two minutes later that Krista Thorn stopped. ODU had a chance again in the 14th minute, but Ashley Kukura's shot was saved by Thorn.

After that sequence the Pride began generating some offense. In the 42nd minute Dane Bergstrom sent a shot from 25 yards that Brianna Alvarado knocked off the cross bar, Krysti Rodriguez picked up the rebound but Alvarado was there again for the save, as ODU took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Hofstra tied the score in the 59th minute when Brittany Butts sent a pass to Tiffany Yovino who sent a shot from 15 yards out into the right corner of the goal.

The Pride stayed on the attack as Bergstrom had another shot that Alvarado knocked aside.

Hofstra took the lead in the 73rd minute, a deep ball by Hofstra was delivered over an ODU injured defender on the ground, Laura Greene gathered the ball, her first shot was stopped by Alvarado but Greene gathered the rebound and found the back of the net to give Hofstra the 2-1 lead.

Four minutes later HU added an insurance goal as Bergstrom delivered a shot from 35 yards out that just got over the outstretched arms of Alvarado.

ODU fought back, as Victoria Johnson was taken down in the box, but Jocelyn Weidner's penalty kick was stopped by Emily Morphitis.

Hofstra outshot ODU 24-10 and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Greene led Hofstra with six shots while Johnson and Kelly had two apiece for ODU.

Morphitis picked up the win, making the one save while Alvarado made seven stops for ODU.
