WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNC Wilmington scored the game-winning goal just 42 seconds after Old Dominion University women's soccer tied the score, giving UNCW a 2-1 win Friday afternoon in Wilmington.
After falling behind 1-0 12 minutes into the second half, ODU continued to fire shots at UNCW. In the 84th minute, Rachael Carroll sent a corner kick into the middle of the field that a UNCW defender knocked into the net to tie the score.
Just 42 seconds Erin Pardini fired a shot for UNCW that Brianna Alvarado saved, but Amanda Holmes was able to corral the rebound, and score the game-winner.
Megan Novak put UNCW on the board in the 57th minute. Amanda Holmes sent a ball into the box that was tapped by Stephanie Rose over to Novak, who sent a sliding shot into the back of the net.
ODU had several solid scoring opportunities, in the 51st minute Ashley Kukura got a shot off that UNCW goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter stopped. In the 53rd minute, Ashlee Coutu got off two shots, both were stopped by Hunter.
ODU outshot the Seahawks 19-14 and held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Jocelyn Weidner led ODU with five shots while Kelly Evans and Coutu had three apiece.
The Lady Monarchs return home on Sunday, Oct. 3 to host Georgia State in a 1 p.m. contest.
