WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Behind an incredible shooting effort in the first half, the Lady Monarchs (9-9, 7-1) breezed to an 88-65 win on the road over the William & Mary Tribe (10-9, 3-5). Senior Jessica Canady (Williamsburg, Va.) notched her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, leading four Lady Monarchs in double figures.
Old Dominion got 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting from junior Shadasia Green (Paterson, N.J.), 17 points from junior Jasmine Parker (Norfolk, Va.) paired with six assists, and 14 points from sophomore Tia Lewis (Poulan, Ga.) to go with her six offensive rebounds.
William & Mary's Benson tied the Colonial Athletic Association's all-time record for blocked shots in a career during the loss, swatting two Old Dominion attempts to tie Trish Halpin ('00) from George Mason.
The Lady Monarchs opened up a 24-point lead very quickly, starting the game on a 27-3 run before Janine Aldridge finally stopped the bleeding with a mid-range jumper with 9:49 remaining. ODU had allowed just one made basket and a free-throw, both from Tiffany Benson, in the first 10:11. Meanwhile, the Lady Monarchs were shooting at a scorching clip, 55.6% on 10-of-18 shooting to start the game. The team would actually improve on that for the full 20 minutes, shooting 61.8% (21-of-34) in the first half.
Aldridge would carry the Tribe in the first half, scoring 12 of the 30 points scored in the period, while ODU bottled up leading scorer Taysha Pye for just seven points on 2-of-8 shooting. Senior Tiffany Benson added five points and six rebounds in the first for William & Mary.
ODU was led by the hot hand of junior Jasmine Parker. Coming off a 22-point performance against Towson, she had 15 in the first half against the Tribe. Senior Jessica Canady added 13 points and six boards including the last six of the half.
The teams played even in the second half, with each group scoring 35 points. ODU scored 88 points in the game, the second highest total of the season for the Lady Monarch bunch, including 42 points in the paint. Benson turned it on in the second half for the Tribe, scoring 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting. The Lady Monarchs collaborative effort, though, would be too much for the home team as all but one Lady Monarch scored in the game.
Canady's night highlighted the game for ODU, tying a season-high 18 on 8-of-12 shooting. She also had 10 rebounds, an assist and three steals. Parker tied her career-high in helpers with six assists and added a pair of thefts in the game to go with her 17 points.
The Lady Monarchs silenced Aldridge in the second half, as she finished with 17 points and continued to stifle the Tribe's leading scorer, Pye, who finished with nine point on just 2-of-12 shooting. Benson finished just one rebound shy of a double-double with 21 points and nine rebounds and finished with a terrific 9-of-11 shooting performance.
Old Dominion finished the game shooting 55% from the floor on 33-of-60 shooting. It was the first time ODU had shot over fifty percent in a game since last January 8th at UNC Wilmington.
The Lady Monarchs return to action this Sunday as they host Hofstra University, coming off a huge overtime victory on the road against James Madison tonight. The Pride are 11-9 overall this season with a 4-4 mark in the CAA. Tip is set for 2:00 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center this Sunday, January 31.
