NORFOLK, Va. - The Lady Monarchs cruised to a 30-point win over the George Mason Patriots (7-8, 0-4) tonight, led by sophomore Tia Lewis (Poulan, Ga.) posting her fourth double-double of the season and rookie Carolann Cloutier (Montreal, Quebec) with a new career-high 11 points. Old Dominion improves to 5-9 overall this season and is now 3-1 in league play.
Sophomore Tia Lewis worked for her fourth double-double of the season, with 12 points and 11 rebounds while rookie Carolann Cloutier notched a new career-high, reaching double-figures for the first time in her career. She knocked down a trio of three-pointers en route to an 11-point game.
Old Dominion jumped out to a quick lead, starting the game on an 11-0 run behind Shadasia Green's five points early. The ODU junior would lead the way in the first half with nine points on 3-of-5 shooting.
Midway through the first half, ODU held a double-digit lead before Rashauna Hobbs knocked down a pair of three's to pull George Mason back within four points. ODU rookies Carolann Cloutier and Jackie Cook answered with long balls of their own to maintain the lead, but Mason's 3-point shooting kept the Patriots within single digits for much of the first half.
Despite playing nearly 17 minutes without starting guard Jasmine Parker due to a pair of quick fouls, the Lady Monarchs still held a 10-point lead at the break, 38-28.
Like in the first half, ODU came out of the locker room on a big run. The Lady Monarchs quickly added to the lead with another period-opening 11-0 run to start the second half. The run was extended to 26-7 as ODU opened up a 29-point lead. The Lady Monarchs would lead by as many as 34 when Parker knocked down her only bucket of the game, a jumper from the paint with 5:18 remaining.
Old Dominion held the Patriots to just seven made baskets in the second half, forcing Mason to shoot just 21.9% from the field in the frame. For the game, George Mason shot 27.7% from the field, marking a season-low for an ODU opponent. Meanwhile, the Lady Monarchs shot 47.5% from the field on 28-of-59 shooting, including a 50% effort in the second half on 15-of-30 shooting.
Parker played a season-low 15 minutes due to the first half foul trouble, but still managed to finish the game with five points, five assists, three steals and a rebound. Green would lead the Lady Monarchs on the scoreboard, with 16 points while Lewis and Cloutier joined her as ODU double-digit scorers.
Mason was led by junior Brittney Poindexter, scoring 15 points and falling just one rebound shy of a double-double. Angelee LaTouche hauled in 10 boards and added seven points for the Patriots.
Old Dominion took care of the ball, committing a season-low 13 turnovers while dishing a season-high 17 assists. Parker led the way with 5 assists, followed by Cloutier with four.
The Lady Monarchs return to the hardwood on the road, as they head to Harrisonburg to face James Madison University this Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
