ON THE ROAD:
The ODU Football Monarchs hit the road for the first time in 2010, heading to Buies Creek, North Carolina to face Campbell. In their inaugural season, the Monarchs went 3-1 on the road with wins at Jacksonville (28-27), Savannah State (38-17), and VMI (42-35). The lone setback away from the friendly confines of Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium was a 34-29 loss at Fordham. Saturday's game will be the first of four road games this season for the Monarchs, who have return dates with Monmouth and North Carolina Central, as well as a jaunt over the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel to face Hampton.
LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES AND MOVE FORWARD:
While ODU certainly wished there was a different outcome in last week's 35-25 loss to Jacksonville, the Monarchs are learning from their mistakes and moving on. Head Coach Bobby Wilder has noted that some of the biggest improvement you see out of a team occur between weeks one and two.
WHO'S WHO IN THE BOOKS:
One of Colby Goodwyn's (Hampton, Va.) kick returns against Jacksonville was the second highest return in the brief ODU history. He dashed 68 yards in the second quarter. Mario Crawford (Detroit, Mich.) is ahead of Goodwyn on the list having returned a 76-yard kick in the historic opener vs. Chowan last year.
AIR RAID:
Redshirt quarterback Thomas DeMarco (Palm Desert, Calif.) passed for a career-high 334 yards, the first time he has passed for over 300 yards in a game. It was the fourth time he had a 200+ yard passing game of his ODU career.
TD'S FOR TD:
Thomas DeMarco on his 1-yard jaunt over the endline to pull the Monarchs within three points, 28-25, with 8:28 remaining in the Jacksonville game was his 18th rushing touchdown in his career.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL PERFORMANCE AWARDS:
Colby Goodwyn (Hampton, Va.) was named the National Kick Returner of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) for the week ending September 5th. Goodwyn totaled 86 yards on a pair of kickoff returns in last Saturday's season opener against Jacksonville. He dashed 68 yards in the second quarter, the second highest return in the brief history of the ODU program. After week one of play, Goodwyn's average of 43 yards per kick return places him fourth in FCS national stats. Over the course of this season, CFPA will be recognizing national performers of the week. At the end of the season, CFPA will recognize several national performers of the year. 2010 NOTABLE FIRSTS:
Linebacker Deron Jasper (Dunwoody, Ga.) had the first interception of the 2010 season, while Prentice Gill (Los Angeles, Calif.) had the first touchdown. Both notables were also the first for each in a Monarch uniform.
OPENING WITH A BANG:
And no, we're not talking about the howitzer you hear being shot off before the Monarchs run onto Foreman Field. Old Dominion scored on its opening drive in the 2010 season opener against Jacksonville making it the eighth time in the 12 game history of the program the Monarchs have done so.
12th MONARCH MOMENTS:
There may be 11 Monarchs on the field, but the 12th Monarch is in the stand. Thanks to all the noise of being "Loud and Proud" from the 12th Monarchs at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium, the opposition was charged with 41 penalties last season and seven so far in 2010.

ABOUT CAMPBELL:
Campbell went 3-8 last season and 2-6 in Pioneer Football League play. The Camels showed great improvement in the second year of the program under head coach Dale Steele and tripled the victory total of the inaugural campaign.
Campbell returns a more experience roster than at any point in the program history and sports 48 players that have earned letters in at least one of the first two seasons. CU also brings back each of the four top rusher from the leading rushing team in the conference last season. The 2009 Camels averaged 189.73 yards per game to lead the Pioneer Football League and rank 13th nationally.
In their season opener, Campbell's redshirt senior quarterback Daniel Polk was able to scamper in with the game-winning touchdown from a yard out with 0:08 seconds left in the game to secure a thrilling 20-16 come-from-behind victory over UVA Wise.Polk completed 17 passes for 179 yards and ran 13 times for 45 yards and two scores.
Junior running back Rashaun Brown led the Campbell effort with 85 yards on 12 carries. Redshirt junior Harrison Jordan totaled seven catches for 73 yards. Campbell defense was led by redshirt senior Lee Stanley's 14 tackles. Freshman Taurean Lynch made an immediate impact with two sacks for the Camels.
The UVA-Wise victory improved Campbell to 2-1 all-time on the season's opening day. The win was CU's second in four tries at night since the program was restarted in 2008.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK: Football Monarchs Take 28-17 Victory In Battle Of The Newcomers
NORFOLK, Va. -- In the battle of upstart programs, the ODU football team had two touchdown receptions by Nick Mayers (Va. Beach, Va.) and a season-high 145 yards rushing from Desmond Williams (Windsor, N.C.) to lead the Monarchs to a 28-17 victory over Campbell at a blustery Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium Saturday night.
For the fifth game last season, the Monarchs scored on its opening drive, needing just two minutes and 41 seconds to light up the scoreboard. Staring the contest at their own 25, six plays later Reid Evans (Hampton, Va.) tore down the field on a 42-yard touchdown reception run. For Evans, it was the leading Monarch receiver's first touchdown catch. Following the Drew Hareza (McDonald, Pa.) extra point, Old Dominion was ahead 7-0 with 12:19 on the clock.
Starting the second quarter, it was Campbell's turn. The Fighting Camels drove 91 yards and capped their drive with Rashaun Brown running into the end zone on a 14-yard carry.
On their next possession, the Camels' used a 36-yard field goal from Adam Willets to go ahead with 8:02 left in the opening half of action.
The second half however belonged to Old Dominion, outscoring Campbell 21-7.
Mayers collected the lone touchdown of the third quarter and then opened up scoring in the fourth quarter on his second touchdown reception. Quarterback Thomas DeMarco (Palm Desert, Calif.) connected on a 14-yard pass to the redshirt freshman wide receiver with 5:23 remaining in the third quarter to put ODU ahead for good with a 14-10 advantage. Opening up the final stanza, Mayers missed the first pass from DeMarco following a Camel punt, but made good on the second with a 41-yard touchdown reception.
Williams rounded out the Monarch scoring on the night with just over four minutes remaining in the game. Williams owned the drive, accounting for 70 of the 94 yards on Monarch possession. Getting to within three yards of the end line, DeMarco tried carrying the ball through the middle but was just short of another ODU touchdown. On the third attempt, DeMarco handed the ball off to Williams who scooted to the left and muscled his way in for the score and a 28-10 Monarch lead. Campbell scored late in the fourth quarter for the final total. The Camels needed just over a minute following the previous ODU tally with Daniel Polk using the keeper for a yard to capture the touchdown.
Defensively, ODU was led yet again by Mychael McJunkins (Kansas City, Mo.). He led the Monarchs with eight tackles, including six solo stops. McJunkins has led the team in tackles in five of ODU's seven games.
DeMarco completed eight of his 14 passes for 145 yards, connecting with Mayers three times for 65 yards and Evans three times for 64 yards. Polk finished the night with 185 yards completing 16 of his 23 attempts.
MONARCH MOMENTS
WE'RE ON THE ONE:
Punter Jonathan Plisco (Newport News, Va.) had a 76-yard punt midway through the third quarter for his longest punt of the year. That punt caused the Camels to start their drive all the way from their own one-yard line. Having helped the Camels stay downfield, it helped set up the Monarchs' first touchdown drive of the second half. Plisco's previous long was 61.
D.D. DOWN FIELD:
Desmond Williams (Windsor, N.C.) ran for 145 yards in the victory over Campbell, the second most rushing yardage for a Monarch last season.
SECOND HALF STOP:
After the Camels gained 137 yards on the ground in the first half, the ODU defense only allowed Campbell to gain 59 rushing yards in second half action.
