COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Despite leading early after senior Loran Hatch tallied her first goal of the season, the 16th-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team fell, 3-1, at No. 2 Maryland Friday evening.
Hatch was able to get ODU on the board first in the 29th minute as she notched her first goal of the season off an ODU penalty corner. Alyschia Conn and Paige Clutter assisted on the Hatch score.
The Lady Monarchs could not hold the lead going into the intermission though as Maryland's Ali McEvoy scored the equalizer with just over a minute remaining in the opening stanza.
After being outshot in the first half, Maryland responded in the second. The Terrapins got off 14 shots in the second period and scored twice, while holding ODU scoreless.
Jill Witmer scored Maryland's second goal after receiving a pass in front of the cage off a penalty corner and Katie O'Donnell put the game out of reach after scoring her third goal of the season with less than five minutes to play.
The Lady Monarchs, who have played three straight road games against ranked opponents, fall to 1-2 on the year. The Terrapins improve to 3-0.
Old Dominion takes on another tough opponent Sunday as the Lady Monarchs travel to No. 3 Virginia for a 1 p.m. game in Charlottesville.
