ODU Battles Mason To 0-0 Tie

NORFOLK, VA--The ODU Soccer Monarchs (4-2-1/1-0-1) and Patriots of George Mason (4-2-1/0-0-1) battled 110 minutes to a 0-0 tie Saturday evening at the ODU Soccer Complex.

There were 20 shots on goal between the two teams to keep both goalkeepers busy. ODU's senior Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, VA.) had eight saves, while Mason's Sean Cote had 11.

In the second and final overtime period, Evan Newton saves two point blank shots by Derek Markheim and Alhagi toure with less than two minutes to play. Mason's Cote also save two big shots in the period as well, included one from Jordan LeBlanc as time ran out. Early in the second half junior defender Thomas Webb saved a shot from Alhagi Toure. Anthony Han also missed a one-on-one shot wide left late in the second overtime period for Mason.

Newton now has 202 career saves which places him five shy of the school mark of 207 set by ODU Hall of Fame keeper Joey Mallia (1987-90). Newton already owns the ODU shutout mark with 33.

Overall, ODU had 21 shots and Mason 17. The Monarchs had 11 shots on goal to the Patriots nine. Freshman Gideon Asante (Sunyani, Ghana), sophomore Chris Harmon (Downingtown, PA. )and sophomore Jordan LeBlanc (Haverford, PA.) led ODU with three shots on goal each. Derek Markheim had three for the Patriots.

ODU returns to action Tuesday night when they host third ranked North Carolina who reached the NCAA semi-last year at 7 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex.
