NORFOLK, VA - Eric Schoenle's goal with five minutes left in the match lifted the Mountaineers ofWest Virginia (2-2) to a 2-1 victory over Old Dominion (3-1) in the 35th Annual Stihl Soccer Classic. William and Mary beat Rhode Island, 4-0 in the earlier game to win the Classic crown.
In the first half, WVU took a 1-0 lead on a Franck Tayou goal with the assist from Uwem Etuk.With a little more than 20 minutes remaining in the match, ODU freshman Gideon Asante (Sunyani, Ghana) took a pass from sophomore Yannick Smith (Hillsborough, NJ.) and shot it into the net to tie the match at 1-1.
WVU got a corner kick with 4:59 left in the match where Eric Schoenle gathered Travis Pittman's kickand scored to give the Mountaineers the lead and the 2-1 victory. WVU took second place.
ODU outshot WVU, 13-9 overall and 6-4 in shots on goal. West Virginia's goal keeper Zack Johnsonhad five saves, while ODU's Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, Va.) had two.
In the first game of the day, William and Mary defeated Rhode Island, 4-0 as Ryan Snyder scored twice and assisted on another goal for the Tribe (3-0).
