NORFOLK, Va. - Senior midfielder Loran Hatch scored her team-high fourth goal of the season, but the No. 17 Old Dominion field hockey team dropped its home opener, 3-1, against No. 9 Syracuse Saturday afternoon at the Powhatan Sports Complex.

Hatch has now scored all of ODU's goals in its last three games. The Lady Monarchs fall to 1-4 on the year and will continue their tough schedule with a match up against No. 12 Ohio State on Sunday.

Junior goalkeeper Marla Petriello made a career-high 13 saves in the loss.

Syracuse (4-1) was led by junior forward Heather Susek who scored the final two goals of the game for the Orange.

Freshman Leonie Geyer got Syracuse on the board first when she blasted a shot from 10 yards out that beat Petriello.

The Lady Monarchs responded before halftime though as Hatch had her initial shot off a penalty corner blocked, but she recovered the loose ball and her ensuing shot found the back of the cage to tie the game at one entering the intermission.

Less than a minute into the second half, Susek tallied her first goal of the day and second of the year. The junior collected a rebounded off a Petriello save and her put-back gave the Orange a 2-1 advantage.

Syracuse increased its lead 10 minutes later when Susek took advantage of another rebound opportunity and posted her second goal of the afternoon. The Orange defense took over from that point as ODU was only able to muster three shots in the second half.

Syracuse will now play third-ranked Virginia, which beat Ohio State 4-2 in Saturday's first game. That game will get underway at 12 noon on Sunday with the Lady Monarchs facing the Buckeyes at 2 p.m.
