BLACKSBURG, VA--ODU freshman Gideon Asante (Sunhani, Ghana) scored early in the first half to lead the Monarchs to a 1-0 exhibition match win over Virginia Tech Saturday evening.
Asante's unassisted goal came almost six minutes into the match. The Monarchs dominated play, outshooting the Hokies, 20-8. Sophomore All-CAA performer Yannick Smith (Hillsborough, NJ.) led ODU with six attempts followed by Asante with five.
Senior All-CAA goalkeeper Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, Va.) made four saves and picked up the shutout.
The Monarchs finish the exhibition season with a 2-0 record and open the regular season next
Saturday evening in Richmond, VA. against defending Big South regular season champion Coastal Carolina in the first round of the VCU Tournament. ODU will then play Florida Gulf Coast in the second round on Monday, Sept. 6.
