LEXINGTON, Va. - Jocelyn Weidner scored two goals and added an assist to lead Old Dominion University women's soccer to a 4-1 win Friday evening at VMI.
With the win, ODU improves to 1-0-1 on the year, while VMI drops to 0-2.
The Lady Monarchs got the scoring started in the 18th minute, when Rachael Carroll sent a corner kick that Amber Cook headed in off the left post to give ODU the lead. The goal was the first of Cook's career.
Just five minutes later, Victoria Johnson left a tap pass for Weidner, who fired a shot from 25 yards to the top left corner past the VMI keeper for the eventual game-winner.
The Lady Monarchs just missed an opportunity when Kelly Evans sent a centering pass that Victoria Johnson got a foot on but hit the crossbar.
Old Dominion held a 17-1 shot advantage in the first half and held a 2-0 edge in corner kicks. VMI did not attempt a corner kick in the game.
VMI cut the lead to one in the 55th minute. Sarah Strand sent a deep ball that Amanda Berrios chases down. Berrios and ODU goalkeeper got to the ball at the same time, but Berrios was able to recover and knock the ball into the empty net.
The Lady Monarchs responded just six minutes later as Weidner sent a cross pass from the right side that Kirstin Walker gathered and shot to the right of VMI goalkeeper Angela Redmond.
ODU finished off the scoring in the 86th minute. Carroll sent a free kick into the box from the right side that was kicked around and ended up on the foot of Weidner. The junior midfielder gathered the ball and sent a shot to the top right corner past Redmond. The two-goal game is the first of Weidner's career.
Old Dominion outshot the Keydets 31-3 in the match. Johnson led the team with six shots while Kelly Evans and Walker each had five. Berrios had two of VMI's three shots.
