UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Despite equaling Penn State in shots, No. 16 Old Dominion was unable to find the back of the cage as the 18th-ranked Nittany Lions blanked the Lady Monarchs 4-0 in both teams season opener Friday at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.
Old Dominion, which topped Penn State 2-1 in the 2009 season opener at the Powhatan Sports Complex, controlled much of the play in the games opening half. The Lady Monarchs outshot PSU 11-6 and had seven penalty corners, but could not put one past Nittany Lion goalkeeper Ayla Haulus.
Senior Loran Hatch led ODU with three shots-on-goal, while classmate Alyschia Conn and junior Kathryn Kirk registered two scoring chances each. Haulus tallied a game-high 13 saves for PSU.
Penn State had only four corners in the first period, but Hannah Allison and Kelsey Amy took advantage, scoring on each of their shots to go up 2-0.
In the second half, PSU continued to apply pressure, outshooting ODU 9-4 and earning seven corners. Late goals from Daneen Zug and Amy sealed the season opening win for the Nittany Lions.
Junior goalkeeper Marla Petriello made four saves for the Lady Monarchs in her first career start.
Old Dominion will continue its four-game road trip to start the 2010 season on Sunday when the Lady Monarchs travel to the nation's capital to battle No. 15 American. Game-time is set for 2 p.m.
