NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University women's soccer and Syracuse played to a scoreless draw in the regular-season opener for the Lady Monarchs on a humid Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Monarchs (0-0-1) delivered the first quality scoring chance of the afternoon when Victoria Johnson ripped a shot from the left side but Orange goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made the save.

Syracuse (0-1-1) added a scoring opportunity in the 23rd minute with a Tina Romagnuolo shot, but Brianna Alvarado came up with the save.

The two teams combined for just five shots in the first half.

Syracuse came out firing early in the second half, but ODU was able to stop the pressure. Just six minutes into the half Taylor Chamberlain hit the crossbar and the ODU defense cleared the ball away. Two minutes later Jasmine Watkins hit a shot from the top of the box but Alvarado made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.

Just after Chamberlain hit the crossbar, ODU had one of its best chances of the afternoon. Rachael Carroll sent in a corner kick from the right side, and after a scrum, Amber Cook's shot went just over the crossbar.

The Lady Monarchs' best chance in the first overtime came when Ashley Kukura broke through the left side but her shot went high of the net.

Alvarado made three saves on the day, but was active clearing the ball and taking away scoring opportunities. Anghel also made three saves for Syracuse.

Syracuse outshot the Lady Monarchs 15-7, led by Romagnuolo with four, while Johnson led ODU with four as well.

Old Dominion is back in action Friday, Aug. 22 when they travel to VMI to take on the Keydets at 5:30 p.m.
