Verlander Named To Third Major League All-Star Game

ODU pitching great Justin Verlander ('04) has been added to the American LeagueAll-Star team. It will be his third All-Star selection. The 81st Major LeagueAll-Star Game will be televised nationlly by FOX Tuesday night.

"The All-Star Game is the All-Star Game, no matter how you get there," Verlander said before the official announcement was made. "Like I said earlier, when the time came for voting and stuff, I didn't feel like I was warranted to go. But since then, I think I've thrown the ball pretty well. I wouldn't be out of place there. It's always an honor to go and represent your team and represent your city. I'd definitely be excited."

Verlander ranks among the American League's top five in threecategories as we head into the All-Star break.

The All-time strikeout leader in ODU, CAA and Virginia Division Ihistory is second in the American League with an 11-5 record. He is23rd in earned run average at 3.82. He has made 18 starts thus far this season.

Verlander has 110 strikeouts in 115.1 innings of work which rankshim fifth in the AL. He also ranks fifth in the League with an 8.58strikeouts per nine innings.

Verlander fanned a season high 11 against the Washington Nationals and nineagainst Cleveland.

Since joining the Tigers in 2005, he has compiled a 76-48 record.

"That's always the most excited about it for me, seeing my teammates," Verlander said. "If I get to go out there, it would be exciting to watch the Home Run Derby and watch Miggy put on a show like he does everyday here for us at batting practice."

ODU MINOR LEAGUE UPDATESJake McAloose ('10) is currenlty hitting .205 with nine hits, three doublesand three RBI for the Chicago Cubs Arizona Rookie League Cubs through 12 games.

Shortstop Gerard Hall ('09) is currently hitting .235 in 80 games with 70 hits,20 doubles, two homers and three triples along with 30 RBI for the Kansas City Royals Burlington Bees in the Class A Midwest League.

Anthony Shawler ('08) is 2-0 with a 2.76 ERA for Lakeland in the Florida State League and the AA Erie SeaWolves of the Double-A Eastern league. Shawler has 38 strikeouts in 43.1 innings of work for Erie.

Dexter Carter ('08) is 0-0 with a 3.72 ERA with the Eugene Emeralds of the Class A Short-Season Northwest League for the San Diego Padres. He has nine strikeouts in 9.2 innings of work. Earlier in the season, he was 1-4 for Fort Wayne TinCaps in the Midwest League. Carter had 28 strikeouts in 38 innings of work.

Catcher Joe Velleggia ('10) is currently hitting .077 through six games withthe Baltimore Orioles Rookie Appalachian League Bluefield Orioles.
