NORFOLK, VA--James Madison junior righthander Turner Phelps pitched a complete gameFive-hitter to lead the Dukes (15-12/6-3) to a 4-1 win over Old Dominion (11-19/2-4) Sunday afternoon.
ODU got on the board first as Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the game off with a single and then scored from first on a double by junior Edgar Hernandez (Puerto Rico). Joe Velleggia (Monkton, MD.) and Chris Baker(Chesapeake, Va.) also got doubles in the game for ODU.
JMU tied the game in the second on a Brett Garner sacrifice fly which scored David Herbek. In the fourth Jamie Lowery's sacrifice fly scored Matt Browning, then Garner tripled to score Matt Townsend.
Trevor Knight completed JMU's scoring with an RBI single in the fifth which scored Cole McInturff. Phelps evened his record to 3-3 as he fanned 10 and walked just two batters.
ODU's Brett Harris (Chesapeake, Va.) and Austin Wright (Virginia Beach, Va.) combined to pitch three scoreless relief innings.
The Monarchs return to action on Tuesday when they host the Flames of Liberty at 5 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
