FAIRFAX, Va. - Sophomore Rebecca Hartrum collected a pass in traffic from classmate Lisa Bernardini and blasted a shot that found the back of the net with only 12 seconds remaining in the second overtime session, lifting Old Dominion to a thrilling 10-9 double-overtime victory at George Mason Sunday afternoon.
After allowing five consecutive goals late in the second half to lose their lead, the Lady Monarchs (3-11, 1-5 CAA) needed a goal with under a minute remaining in regulation to force overtime.
Senior Ashley Kellogg put a perfect pass onto the stick of classmate Saratu Dodo and she scored to push the game into overtime.
George Mason (3-13, 0-6) regained its lead after Megan Udovich scored her fourth goal of the day with 1:16 remaining in the first of two three-minute overtime sessions. The Patriots won the ensuing draw control and ODU goalkeeper Sarah Geary had to make a pair of critical saves to keep it a one-goal deficit entering the second three-minute period.
Mason won the draw control to start the next period as well and after burning nearly two minutes, the Patriots got a shot off, but Geary made yet another save.
With time dwindling down, ODU got the ball into GMU's zone and senior Nicole McMahon was fouled and given a free position opportunity with 15 seconds left in the first overtime. She shot the ball low and it went past the keeper to tie the game and force a second overtime period.
After both teams turnover the ball over, the Lady Monarchs held possession in Mason's zone with less than 30 seconds remaining. Bernardini looked for a cutting Hartrum and found her with less than 20 seconds to go. Hartrum fought through a pair of defenders to get the game-winning shot off and into the net. The assist was Bernardini's second of the day and team-high 22nd of the year.
McMahon tallied a team-high three goals and added an assist for a four point day, while Kellogg and Dodo each scored a pair. Kellogg now has 125 career goals, tying her with former teammate Kelly Kimener (2005-09) for fourth on the all-time Lady Monarchs goal scoring list.
Geary ended the day with nine saves and a season-high four caused turnovers.
George Mason netted the first goal of the game just over seven minutes in, but Old Dominion took control of the first half from there. McMahon and Kellogg each scored twice during a 4-0 Lady Monarch run that gave ODU a 4-1 lead at the 8:26 mark.
Old Dominion held Mason scoreless for over 17 minutes until Caitlin Formato found the back of the net for the Patriots.
Senior Saratu Dodo got ODU's lead back to three-goals after showing off her athleticism with a spin move at the top of the circle that allowed her to elude the Mason defender and have a clear path to the cage. Dodo blasted the shot from five yards out and it found the back of the net for the senior's ninth goal of the year.
The Patriots reclaimed some momentum back though entering halftime as leading goal scorer Emily Ellisen tallied her 30th goal of the year with only three seconds remaining to cut ODU's lead to 5-3 at the break.
Old Dominion took its biggest lead, 7-3, after Clara Flanagan and Katherine Bruno posted the first two scores of the second half. Mason stormed back though over the final 22 minutes, scoring five straight goals to take an 8-7 lead.
After Sarah Wright had her free position shot saved with less than a minute remaining in regulation, Flanagan came up with a crucial groundball that eventually led to Dodo's game-tying score.
The Lady Monarchs had chances to win the game in regulation, but GMU goalkeeper Sara Longobucco made two big saves against both Kellogg and Dodo, forcing the dramatic overtime stanzas.
Old Dominion will wrap up the 2010 season Wednesday at William & Mary. The season finale will get under way at 7 p.m.
