NORFOLK, Va. - Senior Nicole McMahon scored a late goal for Old Dominion to force overtime, but Delaware netted a tally in the second extra session to give the Blue Hens a 12-11 victory Sunday afternoon at the Powhatan Sports Complex.
Senior Ashley Kellogg and sophomore Lisa Bernardini combined for seven goals and three assists to lead ODU, while Emily Schaknowski posted a team-high four goals to pace Delaware.
Old Dominion (2-10, 0-4 CAA) raced out to an 8-4 lead in the first half, but two late Delaware (5-9, 2-3) goals cut the Lady Monarchs edge to 8-6 at the half.
The Blue Hens carried that late momentum into the second half, scoring four of the first five goals to go up 10-9. A Holly Burman goal would put UD on top 11-10 with 6:11 remaining.
Delaware won the ensuing draw control and began killing the clock until Bernardini forced a turnover with just over three minutes left. After sprinting up the sideline, the sophomore dished the ball to a streaking McMahon who found the back of the net, tying the game at 11.
Senior Jessica Capra won the next draw, giving ODU a chance to win in regulation. However, shots from both Bernardini and McMahon went wide as regulation came to an end.
In the first overtime session, Delaware was held without a shot and Old Dominion was only able to muster a last second shot from a tough angle that was saved as the clock ran out.
In double overtime, Delaware's leading goal scorer, Ali Libertini got free and blasted a shot past ODU goalkeeper Sarah Geary to give the Blue Hens the instant victory.
The Lady Monarchs will wrap up their home slate on Friday, April 23 against James Madison at 7 p.m. Prior to the game their will be a brief ceremony to honor the 2010 senior class.
