LYNCHBURG, VA--Junior outfielder Nate Hartman's (Orlando, FL.) two-run double put the Monarchs up for good in the fifth inning as Old Dominion (9-5) defeated Liberty, 5-3 today, giving the Flames their first loss of the season.
Liberty took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a solo homer by Jeff Jefferson and RBI single by Curran Redal.
In the ODU fourth, senior John Malbon (Virginia Beach, VA.) singled home Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, VA.) for the Monarchs first run. In the fifth, with the bases loaded, Brett Harris (Chesapeake, VA.) walked to force home Brandon Shelton (Chesapeake, Va.) and tie the game at 2-2.Hartman then doubled down the rightfield line to score McAloose and Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, VA.)to put ODU up, 4-2.
The Monarchs fifth run came in the ninth as Austin Wright (Virginia Beach, VA.) doubled to left center to score Corsner.
Senior shortstop Jake McAloose had two hits and scored twice for the Monarchs. Donnie Corsner alsoscored twice, while Brandon Shelton had two hits for the Monarchs. Hartman leads the Monarchs with 19 RBI thus far this season in just 13 games.
Sophomore righthander Brandon Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) pitched a complete game, scatteringeight hits, walking only one with three strikeouts to bring his record to 2-0 on the season with a 1.63 ERA. ODU travels to Elon for a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday.
Junior lefthander Kyle Hald (Springfield, Va.) was named CAA Pitcher of the Week after tossing a five-hitComplete game shutout last Friday against LaSalle in which he fanned a career high tying 11 batters for the second straight week.
