WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The ODU women's lacrosse tema (0-1) jumped out to a quick lead at American University (2-4) today, but could not hold on in the second half as they lost the season opener, 12-10. It was the first time the Eagles have ever beaten ODU, in 19 all-time matchups.
Old Dominion was led by seniors Ashley Kellogg and Nicole McMahon, each scoring three goals.
The Lady Monarchs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with the first of McMahon's three coming on an assist from Clara Flanagan. Flanagan would add her own just under three minutes later. In the first half, ODU would score seven goals and went up by three with just 3:17 remaining on McMahon's second goal, assisted by Rebecca Hartrum.
After that goal, though, American would key a 7-1 run to take an 11-8 lead late in the second half. The Eagles scored four straight between the end of the first and first ten minutes of the second, coming from four different players.
The fourth would give American their first lead of the game, followed by the equalizer from Kellogg. She tied it up with an unassisted goal, but American's Amanda Makoid would add two more in the run for a game-high four goals to put the Eagles up by three.
McMahon's third goal would come unassisted with 9:16 remaining to get ODU back within two, but American answered with 5:18 remaining to hold off Old Dominion. Sophomore Lisa Bernardini would add her second goal in the waning minutes, but ODU would be unable to capitalize further and fell, 12-10.
The Lady Monarchs dropped their season opener for the first time since 2005 and just the second time since 2000. ODU will host Richmond this Wednesday, March 10 at 4:00 p.m. in their home opener.
