CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Senior Saratu Dodo registered a career-high tying three scores and Old Dominion led early, but No. 4 Virginia controlled play for much of the game in a 22-7 victory over the Lady Monarchs Wednesday evening at Klockner Stadium.
Dodo's three goals match her career-high that she set against Drexel in 2009. Senior Ashley Kellogg, junior Tracy Reed and sophomores Lisa Bernardini and Sarah Wright also posted goals for Old Dominion.
Virginia (8-3), who has defeated six ranked opponents this year, quickly put Old Dominion (2-4) into an early hole by scoring two goals on its first three possessions to go up 2-0 just over two minutes into the contest.
The Lady Monarchs wasted no time responding though as Kellogg, Dodo and Bernardini netted consecutive ODU scores in a five-minute span. With the momentum shifted and Old Dominion leading, 3-2, UVA head coach Julie Myers was forced to call an early timeout.
The stop in play worked though as the Cavaliers came out of the timeout and scored eight straight goals. Kaitlin Duff and Brittany Kalkstein each scored a pair during the UVA run.
The Virginia spurt was halted as Dodo and Wright each found the back of the net for consecutive ODU tallies, but Virginia posted two more goals late in the half to go into the intermission with a 12-5 advantage.
The Cavaliers continued to keep play in their offensive end to start the second half. Duff had two of her career-high six goals during a 6-0 Virginia run to start the second period. By the time Dodo netted her third goal of the game, the Lady Monarchs trailed 18-6. Reed added a late score for the Lady Monarchs.
Virginia outshot Old Dominion, 41-21 and won the draw control battle 21-10.
Old Dominion now returns home for a pair of non-conference games this weekend. The Lady Monarchs will face Louisville on Friday at 4 p.m. and No. 3 North Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m.
