PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Friars (18-14) ended the Lady Monarchs season on Monday night, with a 76-61 win in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). Old Dominion finishes the 2009-10 season with a 19-14 record overall.
Sophomore forward Tia Lewis scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half and junior guard Jasmine Parker added 13 for ODU to round out the Lady Monarch double-digit scorers. A hot-shooting night as a team (46.2% from the field) would not be enough as the Friars also shot over 48% in the win.
Old Dominion led 12-5 lead early, but Providence answered with an 8-0 run, punctuated by a shot-clock buzzer beating three from Chelsea Marandola and then a quick steal and put back from Lola Wells. The Wells bucket put the Friars up by one for the first time in the ball game, 13-12.
The Friars would not trail the the rest of the half, getting it up to as many as five at 35-30, before ODU redshirt freshman JoNiquia Guilford knocked down a three from the corner with five seconds remaining to cut the lead back to two at halftime, 35-33.
The Lady Monarchs leaned on Jasmine Parker in the first half, scoring ten of ODU's first 21 points. Mi-Khida Hankins and Chelsea Marandola were off to a quick start for the Friars, scoring eight and ten points each.
As a team, ODU was shooting at a 52% (13-25) clip while Providence finished the first twenty minutes at 42.9% (15-for-35).
Out of the break, Shadasia Green tied the game at 37 all, but Providence would answer with a 9-0 run. Tia Lewis would end the run with a layup, but the Friars added a fast-break layup from Symone Roberts for the 48-39 lead. The lead would stretch to as many as 10, at 50-40 with just over 12 minutes remaining.
After ODU went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to four, Roberts added a traditional three-point play with 8:25 remaining to get Providence another 7-point cushion. The give-and-take would go back in favor of Old Dominion, as the Lady Monarchs cut it to three, 57-54, with 6:33 on the clock, but then back to Providence with another run to go ahead 65-58 with 3:39 remaining.
A Brittany Dorsey three with 3:18 left increased the lead to ten again, and the Lady Monarchs would not not be able to cut it this time. Free-throws down the stretch would extend the final deficit to 15, with a 76-61 win for the Friars.
Lewis tried to put Old Dominion on her back in the second half, scoring 14 points on a perfect 5-for-5 performance from the field. She finished with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting, adding four rebounds for ODU. Parker finished with 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting with two assists and two steals for ODU.
Providence had four players in double figures, led by a double-double from Mi-Khida Hankins. She finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Chelsea Marandola added 19, Brittany Dorsey 14 and Trinity Hull 11.
Old Dominion wraps up the 2009-10 season with the second round exit in the WNIT and a 19-14 overall record.
