ATLANTA, Ga. - Senior Gerald Lee and junior Keyon Carter combined for 24 second half points as Old Dominion pulled away late in a 75-62 road CAA win at Georgia State Tuesday evening.
Old Dominion (22-8, 14-3 CAA) shot 54.2 from the field to improve to 7-0 this season when hitting at least half of its field goals.
Carter finished with a team-high tying 14 points, including 12 in the second half. Sophomore Kent Bazemore also hit for 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while dishing out five assists.
Senior's Lee and Marsharee Neely also posted double-figures with 12 and 13 points respectively. Junior Darius James scored nine points and handed out a game-high six assists, while not committing a single turnover.
ODU dished out 16 assists and shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from beyond the arc in the victory.
The Monarchs shot 60-percent in the first half and Bazemore paced the squad with 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting. The sophomore also added four assists to his stat line in the opening frame.
Old Dominion led by as many as eight (32-24), but Georgia State closed the half on a 10-3 run to enter the intermission trailing by a single point, 35-34.
The Monarchs scored the first five points of the second half and ODU held the Panthers without a field goal from the 18:08 mark until the 12:18 mark. However, a Jihad Ali triple would tie the game at 44 with 12 minutes remaining.
Trailing 49-46, the Monarch offense came alive as Carter sparked a 10-0 run. The junior hit two critical three's and made a free throw, while Neely swiped a steal and went coast-to-coast to score a traditional three-point play during the run.
After Georgia State's Trey Hampton converted a lay-in, the Monarchs rattled off the next eight points to take their largest lead of the evening, 64-51, with just under four minutes remaining. The Panthers cut the lead to as little as five with 53 seconds to go, but they could get no closer.
Georgia State (12-18, 5-12) was led by Joe Dukes' game-high 22 points. Trey Hampton chipped in 17 points and seven rebounds.
The ODU win, coupled with a Northeastern loss Tuesday against Hofstra, puts the Monarchs in sole possession of first in the CAA.
Old Dominion returns home on Saturday, Feb. 27 to take on Virginia Commonwealth in each team's regular season finale. The game, which will be senior night for Lee and Neely, will take place in front of a sold-out crowd at the Ted Constant Center with tip time set for 4 p.m. The contest will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic.
