Women's Rowing Hosts Women of Excellence Luncheon

Feb. 10, 2010

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's rowing team hosted its semi-annual Women of Excellence (WOE) Brown Bag Luncheon.

The WOE program, initiated by head coach Heather Weisel, is in its second year and serves as an opportunity for student-athletes from campus and the Hampton Roads community to interact, serve as an introduction to networking, and provide the team with the opportunity to develop mentors and friends, in addition to introducing ODU and the sport of rowing to the community.

This semester's WOE program featured guests from C.R.E.W.- Commercial Real Estate Women. CREW is a networking organization for women who conduct many differnent types of businesses that are affiliated with commercial real estate. Guest speakers included Dot Wood, Cathy Harris, Sara Howard, Rhonda Scott, Krista Costa, Abby Dunworth and J. Robin Gasser.

After some general introductions, small groups were assembled where discussions on a wide variety of topics from the origin of Women's Olympic Rowing to Clara Barton, movies, books, and how swimmers become rowers took place.

"We're so honored that these women spent some of their valuable time with us today," said Weisel of the event. "We had a great time getting to know a bit about each other and the example set for our young student-athletes about the power and strength of women. It was inspiring and motivating!"

Plans are in the works for the 2010-2011 WOE sessions. Please contact Head Coach Heather Weisel at hweisel@odu.edu if you would like to be involved.
