WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The ODU Lady Monarchs (10-9, 8-1) take their seven-game winning streak on the road to face the UNC Wilmington Seahawks (7-13, 2-7) this Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.
Old Dominion has won seven straight CAA contests including a pair last week at William & Mary and at home against Hofstra that would give ODU 900 wins all-time in the history of the program. ODU became just the third team in NCAA history to reach the benchmark, following Tennessee and Louisiana Tech as the winningest all-time programs. The Lady Monarchs have gone 900-309 since 1969-70.
Jasmine Parker (Norfolk, Va.) continues to lead Old Dominion in CAA action, averaging a team-high 13.9 points per game and eclipsing the 750-point plateau last game. She is leading the team in assists, steals and 3-point shooting this year and provides veteran leadership on the floor for over 27 minutes a game.
Senior Jessica Canady has also been dominant in CAA play this season, averaging 11.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. With 913 career points, she needs just 87 to become the 27th Lady Monarch in history to reach 1,000.
The Seahawks have been led by Brittany Blackwell, in scoring and rebounding. Blackwell is averaging 13.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. UNC Wilmington is just 2-7 in CAA action this season, with both wins coming against William & Mary.
Today's Game:
All-Time Series - The Lady Monarchs have never lost the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington, owning a perfect 40-0 record against the CAA opponent. The streak is the second longest active winning streak for the Lady Monarchs, after the 49-game winning streak against William & Mary. Old Dominion won all three matchups last season, including a 61-56 win in the CAA quarterfinals.
About the Seahawks - UNC Wilmington opened the season 3-1 at home, but has lost three of the last four to CAA opponents, including losses to VCU, Northeastern and an overtime loss to Hofstra. The Seahawks have fallen into a slump, dropping nine of the last twelve games.
UNCW has been led this season by Brittany Blackwell, scoring 13.3 points per game and is also leading the Seahawks on the glass, hauling in 7.8 rebounds per game. Blackwell is also leading the team in assists and steals this season.
Greta Luksyte is also averaging double figures as the deep-ball threat in the starting lineup, pouring in 10.5 points per game. Martha White is third on the team in scoring, with 8.9 ppg and is also averaging 4.6 rebounds per game while blocking a shot per game.
As a team, the Seahawks are averaging 63.1 points per game on 42.8% shooting. UNCW lost to both common non-conference opponents with ODU, dropping a 66-52 decision at Hampton and then nearly shocking Maryland on the road, falling by just six, 67-61.
900 WINS!
With the 51-46 win over Hofstra on January 31, the Old Dominion women's basketball program became just the third to win 900 games. Old Dominion women's basketball boasts an all-time record of 900-309 (.744) in over 40 years of play. There are only two other programs in the history of women's basketball with 900 wins, Tennessee and Louisiana Tech.
Milestone March
The Lady Monarchs are just two wins shy of 100 in the Constant Center. Head Coach Wendy Larry is also approaching yet another milestone, just 22 wins shy of her 600th.
Individually, Jessica Canady is just 87 points shy of becoming the 27th Lady Monarch to reach the 1,000 point mark.
51's Enough
Old Dominion defeated Hofstra this season by a final of 51-46. The 51 points scored tied the lowest scored in a win for Old Dominion since 1973-74. Twice prior, ODU has won with just 51 points scored, against UVA in 1980-81 and an overtime win against UNC Wilmington in 2002-03.
Whew! That Was Close
ODU is excelling in tight ball games this season, winning six of the eight games decided by single digits, including four straight at JMU, against Georgia State, on the road against Towson and at home vs. Hofstra. Old Dominion's closest game this season was a 1-point win at Delaware, powered to victory by Jasmine Parker taking a charge and knocking down a go-ahead 3-pointer late in the game.
Three-Point Defense
JMU, one of the nation's top long-ball teams, was able to knock down just a pair of 3-pointers on 23 attempts against the Lady Monarchs. For the season, ODU ranks third in the CAA in 3-pt FG percentage defense, allowing just 29.3% from beyond the arc. Senior Jessica Canady is third in the league, with 56.3% of her shots falling.
