NORFOLK, Va. -- The first national rankings of the spring season were released last week by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), with Old Dominion women's tennis hauling in a national ranking of 52nd in the nation. The team wrapped up last year at #53.
The individual rankings were highlighted for ODU by Nadine Fahoum (Haifa, Israel), in singles. Fahoum ranks 21st in the nation in singles heading into the spring season after a 15-3 start to the 2009-10 season. She won the Wake Forest Invitational and more impressively, the ITA Atlantic Regional. She became just the second Lady Monarch in history to win the Regional and also earned a victory at the ITA Indoor National Championship.
Fahoum defeated three nationally ranked players in the spring, including #48 Csilla Borsanyi (Baylor) at the ITA All-American Tournament. She ranked as high as 88th last season.
ODU also features a doubles team in the national rankings, as freshman Diana Ivanova and junior Marija Citic come in tied for 44th in the nation. The two played together at the ODU Collegiate Invitational, going 4-0 for the win this fall.
The #52 Lady Monarchs open play this weekend against Norfolk State with a match at Noon, Sunday January 17 at home.
