NORFOLK, Va. - Senior Gerald Lee poured in a game-high 24 points, including 20 in the first half, to lead Old Dominion to an 86-48 victory over Elizabeth City State in the Monarchs final exhibition tune-up Saturday evening at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
Lee, the 2009-10 CAA Co-Player of the Year, shot 10-of-17 from the floor and corralled eight rebounds to pace the Monarchs' potent offensive attack. All 11 ODU players that saw action scored in the contest, including double-digit efforts from Frank Hassell and Darius James.
ODU held a distinct advantage in the paint, outscoring Elizabeth City State 44-8. The Monarchs shot 41 percent for the game and held the rebounding edge 64-23.
Old Dominion's wire-to-wire victory was sparked by an 11-0 run to start the game. James started the scoring with a jumper just six seconds into the contest and Lee concluded the spurt with five consecutive points.
The Monarchs would close the opening stanza strong as well, scoring nine of the final 11 points to go into the intermission with a 40-20 lead.
Leading 61-39 with just over 12 minutes remaining, Old Dominion broke the game open with a 13-0 run. James had the first four points of the ODU surge and a lay-in from Hassell would give the Monarchs a 35-point advantage that they wouldn't relinquish.
The Monarchs will begin the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 15 against Bethune Cookman. Game-time is set for 1 p.m. at the Constant Center.
