Nov. 5, 2009

RICHMOND, Va. - Lisa Bernardini (Langhorne, Pa.) was named a Second Team All-CAA defender and three other Lady Monarchs earned all-conference honors as announced tonight by the Colonial Athletic Association after voting from the league's head coaches. Ashlee Coutu (Lebanon, Conn.) earned Third Team All-CAA honors as well as being named to the CAA All-Rookie squad.

Senior Kirstin Walker (Inwood, W. Va.) and junior Ashley Kukura (Virginia Beach, Va.) also earned Third Team honors in the midfield.

Bernardini, a sophomore defender, started all 20 games for the Lady Monarchs this season and was the team's organizing player in the back. She led the team in minutes and anchored a defense that ranked third in the league in goals against (18) and goals against average (0.90). She helped the Lady Monarchs seal seven shutouts this season and held 15 opponents to one goal or fewer, while also notching her first career assist in a neutral site game against Arizona.

Coutu, a true freshman, led the way offensively for Old Dominion in 2009, scoring nine goals and 22 total points on the year. A starting forward for all 20 contests in her first year, Coutu led the team in goals, points and was second on the team in assists with four. She had five gamewinners on the year ranking third in the conference, ranked sixth in the CAA in points and was tied for fifth in the league in goals scored.

Her being named to the All-Rookie Team marks the fifth straight year ODU has had at least one named to the team. Her season is one of the best ever for a newcomer in program history, as she tied teammate Victoria Johnson for second on the all-time rookie goals scored list and is just three points behind Johnson for second in all-time points.

In her final season, Walker posted her finest season, controlling the defensive midfield and adding a spark offensively for the Lady Monarchs. She started all but one game for ODU this season, scoring her first career goals, including the gamewinner, against Radford. She also tallied a second gamewinner against Georgia State and had an assist against UNC Wilmington. A defensive stalwart in the midfield, she played an aggressive brand of soccer for ODU, sliding back on defense occasionally, helping the Lady Monarchs post the third best goals against average in the league.

Also in the midfield, Ashley Kukura earned her second straight all-conference honor. Kukura was tied for fifth on the team in scoring and was the `point guard' for Old Dominion in the midfield. She started in 18 and played in 19 games this season, controlling and organizing the attack. Her three assists give her 11 for her career, tying for 8th on the all-time list.

ODU finished the season with a 7-8-5 record, including a 3-4-4 mark in CAA play.
