NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Old Dominion University junior Nadine Fahoum (Haifa, Israel) lost her opening round match at the 2009 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships today, to the number five seeded Caitlin Whoriskey (Tennessee).
Fahoum gained entrance to the national championship with her win of the singles title at the ITA Atlantic Regional in October. Her draw at nationals, though, was a tough one as she faced 27th ranked Whoriskey in the first round. Whoriskey, a senior, won the Ohio Valley regional as the top seed and earned the number five seed at Nationals.
In the first round on Thursday, the ODU junior dropped the first two games in the first set, but came roaring back and took the lead, 4-3. The Lady Vols player would rebound though, and win the set 6-4. In the second, Whoriskey put away Fahoum in a 6-2 final.
She will now play in the consolation bracket starting on Friday at 2:00 p.m. with her opponent yet to be determined.
