Three Swimmers Reach Finals At Gamecock Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Three members of the ODU swimming and diving team reached the finals on the second day of action at the 2009 Gamecock Invitational hosted by South Carolina on Friday.

After day two action, the ODU men remain in seventh and the ODU women in eighth.

On the men's side North Carolina continues to lead the team scoring followed by host South Carolina and Duke.

On the women's side, the Tar Heels also continue to lead all teams followed by Duke and East Carolina.

April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.) took second in the 100 back registering a time of 55.85, .12 seconds behind the winner Megan Steeves of North Carolina. Barrientos, who holds the Lady Monarch benchmark in the 100 back, was just .38 seconds off her record setting pace.

Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden), also swimming in the 100 back, was the second member of the ODU swim team to make a finals appearance. Ramkvist took seventh in the 100 back with a time of 51.61.

Kristian Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden), meanwhile, placed seventh in the 100 breast final recording a time of 58.18. Ramkvist's time was the 10th fastest 100 breast time in ODU history. Also in the 100 breast, Jobin Bahminipour (San Diego, Calif.) finished in 18th place with a time of 1:01.02.

In the day's other action, the men's 200 medley relays saw the ODU "A" squad place 12th in the event. The team of Mikael Ramkvist, Johan Lundberg (Fjaras, Sweden), Brian Fischetti (Richmond, Va.), and Chad Gangwer (Va. Beach, Va.) logged a time of 1:35.57. The ODU "B" team, which comprised Monarch members Kristian Ramkvist, Jobin Bahminipour, Sean Frye (Sprinfield, Va.), and Steven Gifford (Springfield, Va.), finished with a time of 1:38.84 to come in 17th overall.

In the 400 IM, Kevin Latimer (Newport News, Va.) took 13th followed by teammate Jason Brame (Lynchburg, Va.) in 14th. Latimer recorded a time of 4:06.36, while Brame hit the wall with a 4:07.07 finish. Also racing in the 400 IM was Bryan Russell (Prince George, Va.), who finished the event in a time of 4:15.44 to place 22nd.

The 100 fly saw Brian Fischetti take 22nd overall recording a time of 51.84.

The 800 free relay has a pair of Monarch teams entered. The ODU "A" team, which included Mikael Ramkvist, Kristian Ramkvist, Kristofer Hagg, and Chad Gangwer, placed 14th. They finished the relay with a time of 7:02.09. The "B" team finished right behind the ODU "A" squad in 15th place. The team of Kevin Latimer, Jason Brame, William Shults, and Sean Frye logged a time of 7:04.94.

The women's 200 medley "A" team placed eighth overall. The team, consisting of April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.), Lauren Fiskus (Yorktown, Va.), Agata Nowak (Gorzow, Poland), and Carrie Goodman (Glen Allen, Va.) clocked in with a t time of 1:47.66. The "B" team of Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.), Allyson Nold (Waterloo, Ill.), Ashley Lushsinger (Va. Beach, Va.), and Madeline Stiles (Fairfax, Va.) took 19th. They finished with a time of 1:51.28. The ODU "C" squad including Emma Forbes (Peekskill, N.Y.), Molly Hom (Newport News, Va.), Whitney Tate (Newport News, Va.), and Sara McLaren (Va. Beach, Va.) finished in 26th with a time of 1:56.01.

In the 400 IM, Madeline Stiles finished in 20th place with her time of 4:34.49. Also competing in the event was Molly Hom who took 36th with her time of 4:57.63.

Agata Nowak missed racing for the top eight in the 100 fly, however in the "B" finals, Nowak finished at the top of the heat. The ODU record holder in the event clocked in with a time of 57.25 to place ninth overall. Teammate Jessica Hubert was also in the "B" finals of the 200 fly. She swam to a 13th place finish with a time of 58.16. Hubert's finish gave her the fifth fastest Lady Monarch time in history in the event.

The 100 breast had Lauren Fiskus with a 10th place finish. She recorded a time of 1:05.87.

ODU's "A" squad in the 800 free relay finshed in 17th. The team of Madeline Stile, Emma Forbes, Agata Nowak, and Carrie Goodman combined to time in at 7:54.98. The "B" team of Lauren Johnson, Ashley Lushsinger, Allison Teres, and Sara McLaren placed 19th. They finished the relay in a time of 8:01.24.

In diving action, on the women's side, Kelsey Thompson (Chesapeake, Va.) dove to a 15th place finish on the 1 meter with a score of 212.25. On the men's side, David Skorupa (Richmond, Va.) took 8th on the 3 meter scoring a 284.05.
