COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Old Dominion (0-2) women's basketball team fought back from a 26-point deficit all the way to within eight points of the RV/#20 Maryland Terrapins (3-0), but were unable to counter a late charge and lost by an 84-67 final. Junior guard Jasmine Parker (Norfolk, Va.) poured in a career-high 24 points in the setback.
Parker ignited right from the start, knocking down a trifecta of deep balls and adding a free throw and a go-ahead pull-up jumper to score 12 of the Lady Monarchs first 20 points. Her hot start put Old Dominion up four with 11:24 remaining in the first half. She finished the frame with 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Early foul trouble would plague the Lady Monarchs though, as Maryland was able to close the half on a 20-6 run and take a 13-point lead headed into the locker room. Lynetta Kizer and Lori Bjork led the way for the Terps with nine points each in the first half.
Maryland continued their hot streak early in the second half, forcing both Mairi Buchan and Tia Lewis into their fourth fouls under two minutes into the second half. The Terps extended their lead to a game-high 26 as they started the second half with a 16-3 run in just 3:34 of play.
Maryland native Pryncess Tate-Dublin (Suitland, Md.) came off the bench, though, and sparked a big ODU run. Tate-Dublin knocked down a baseline jumper on her first possession and just minutes later hit a momentum-shifting three with 16:09 remaining. That three was the start of a 22-4 run that got the Lady Monarchs back within eight points with 10:10 remaining on the clock.
Sophomore center Mairi Buchan also played a huge role in the Lady Monarch run, scoring six of her 11 points during the run. Buchan played 15 minutes in the second half with four fouls. Parker never cooled and also had six in the run, including her fourth three-pointer of the contest.
Maryland would recover and stop the run with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws from Anjale Barrett, who finished with 10 points. ODU would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way as the Terps held off the Lady Monarch charge.
Parker had a game-high 24 points in the game, setting a new career mark, on 8-of-16 shooting including four three's. She added five rebounds, four assists and three steals in the game as she paced the Lady Monarch offense. Buchan was also in double figures, with 11 points.
Maryland shot 61.5% from the field in the game (32-52) while Old Dominion shot just 40.3% (25-62).
The Terps got double-figure scoring from four players, led by 22 from Diandra Tchatchouang and 19 from Kizer. The two combined to go 11-for-12 from the field in teh second half with 26 total points.
ODU falls to 0-2 on the season with two losses to nationally ranked teams. The team returns to action this Monday at the Ted Constant Convocation Center against another ACC opponent, NC State (2-1). State comes to Norfolk for the first time since 2002. Tip will be at 7:00 p.m. Following the NC State game, Old Dominion will travel to Cancun, Mexico for the Cancun Thanksgiving Classic next week, where ODU will face Syracuse and Louisville.
