WILMINGTON, N.C. (November 13, 2009) - A first-half goal by junior Allen Lomax and a strong defensive effort sent top-seeded and 21st ranked UNC Wilmington to a 1-0 victory over fourth seeded Old Dominion in the second semifinal of the CAA Men's Soccer Championship on Friday night at UNCW Soccer Stadium.
With the victory, the Seahawks (13-2-4) tied a school record by extending their unbeaten streak to 12 and advanced to the CAA championship game for the first time in school history. UNCW will meet third-seeded Northeastern at 1 p.m. on Sunday. ODU dropped to 11-5-1 with the setback and had their three-match winning streak come to an end. The Monarchs had won three straight and four of their last five.
On the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute, junior Tyler Clare fed a pass from the left sideline to Lomax just outside the left corner of the box. Lomax fired a 20-yard rocket to the lower right corner past Monarchs' keeper Evan Newton for a 1-0 Seahawks' advantage. The goal was Lomax's second of the season.
The Seahawks' defense made the lead stand up as they limited Old Dominion to just five shots in the contest. Junior goalkeeper Brock Duckworth, who leads the nation in save percentage and the CAA in goals against average, made three saves and recorded his seventh shutout of the season.
Three Monarchs, Yannick Smith, Nick Foglesong and Chris Harmon each had a shoton goal.
Junior goalkeeper Evan Newton made three stops for Old Dominion, including a nice save on a 15-yard shot by UNCW's Etienne Boulanger in the 65th minute.
The Monarchs turned up the pressure offensively over the game's final 10 minutes, but weren't able to get the tying score.
