NORFOLK, Va. -- Behind a dominant first half, the #2/2 Stanford Cardinal (1-0, 0-0) defeated the Lady Monarchs in the 2009-10 season opener by a final score of 89-56. Jasmine Parker (Norfolk, Va.) led the way for ODU (0-1, 0-0), scoring 16 points, adding five rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Stanford went on a 22-0 run in just over five minutes of play in the first half, giving the second ranked team in the nation a 29-4 lead with 11:09 remaining. Senior center and pre-season All-American Jayne Appel led the way in the run, scoring seven points.

Old Dominion got a spark from junior Jasmine Parker to stop the run with an assist down low to Tia Lewis (Poulan, Ga.), a steal on the next possessoin and then scoring a traditional 3-point play just minutes later. The modest 8-0 run sparked by the junior guard would slow the Stanford attack, but heading into halftime, the Cardinal led 53-23.

At the break, Stanford was shooting 61.8% from the field (21-34) while ODU managed just 25% on 9-36 shooting. From long-range, Stanford, known for its formidable front court, had 6 three-balls and were shooting 54.5% from deep. Kayla Pedersen and JJ Hones each had a pair in the first.

Parker led the way in the first for Old Dominion, with nine points on 3-of-6 shooting. Junior Shadasia Green (Paterson, N.J.) was also playing well, with two three's for six points in the first.

ODU cooled the Stanford shooting in the second half, outscored by just three in the frame, 36-33. The Lady Monarchs closed the gap to 26 on a Shadasia Green free throw with 10:23 remaining, and again to 27 on a Jasmine Parker lay-in with 7:26 remaining, but would get no closer as Stanford held off the ODU attack the rest of the way.

Lewis had a 9-point second half, to finish with 15 in the game and also hauled in nine boards to finish just shy of her first double-double as a Lady Monarch. Parker's 16 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 dimes led the way for Old Dominion as Shadasia Green joined them in double figure scoring with 11. She also had seven rebounds for Old Dominion.

Stanford got three double-doubles in the game, led by Nnemkadi Ogwumike, who scored 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting and added 12 rebounds. Appel had 19 points and 11 rebounds while Jeanette Pohlen had 15 points and 10 assists.

For the game, Stanford finished 49.2% shooting (32-65) while Old Dominion improved on their overall shooting, finishing 30.4% (21-69).

Old Dominion returns to the court next Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at RV/#21 Maryland. They will return to The Ted on Monday, November 23 at 7:00 p.m. against NC State.
