Lady Monarchs Roll Past Chowan In Exhibition Opener, 85-52

NORFOLK, Va. -- The ODU Lady Monarchs hauled in an impressive 59 rebounds and got double-digit scoring games from three players en route to an 85-52 win in the exhibition opener tonight over Chowan University. Junior guard Shadasia Green (Paterson, N.J.) led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds, adding three assists and three steals as well.

Green was joined by junior Kquanise Byrd (St. Petersburg, Fla.) with 12 and Tia Lewis (Poulan, Ga.) with 11 as the Lady Monarch players in double figure scoring.

After a slow start found the Lady Monarchs tied at eight five minutes into the game with the Hawks, the ODU bench ignited a run that would not be relinquished. ODU went on a 21-2 run led by Green and newcomer Carolann Cloutier (Montreal, Quebec). Green scored five of her 16 points in the run while Cloutier scored all seven of hers off a pair of three-pointers and a free-throw.

ODU, up 29-12, would not look back and held a 15-point lead or more the rest of the way, including a game-high 33-point lead after Green nailed a free-throw with 1:01 remaining in the game and again after Byrd did the same with 28 seconds remaining.

The Lady Monarchs got 40 points off the bench, including an impressive debut from rookie Jackie Cook (Hinckley, Ohio). Cook scored nine points on 3-of-5 shooting and added five rebounds in the game. Byrd added 12 points off the bench on 4-of-7 shooting and she also went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. She added a game-high four steals and assisted on two buckets for ODU.

The team outrebounded the Hawks 59-30 in the contest in dominant fashion. Green's nine boards led Old Dominion with sophomore center Mairi Buchan (Stirlingshire, Scotland) adding eight while Alena Voronina (Brisbane, Australia) and Lewis each hauled in six apiece.

Overall, ODU shot 39.7% from the field on 25-63 shooting including 4-9 from outside (.444). The Lady Monarchs also shot 70.5% from the charity stripe, going 31-44.

Chowan was led by Talaya Lynch, scoring 13 points on 5-15 shooting and three long balls. She also had four rebounds and two steals for the Hawks. Chowan got nine points, five assists and seven rebounds from Ransheda Jennings as well. The Hawks shot 35% from the field (21-60) and 25% from deep (5-20).

ODU will host a second exhibition game this Tuesday as Shaw University comes into the Ted for a 7:00 p.m. tilt. ODU will then open the regular season next Friday, November 13 against #2 Stanford at 7:00 p.m. The game will be a part of the NCAA's PACK THE HOUSE challenge as ODU attempts to sell-out the Ted for the first time in women's basketball history. Tickets will be reduced to $5 for the game and fans are encouraged to wear blue in support of the Lady Monarchs!
