NORFOLK, VA- The Old Dominion University Monarchs defeated Barton College, 91-62in their exhibition opener at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Barton won25 games last year and was the NCAA Division II National champion in 2007.
Kent Bazemore led the way for ODU with 17 points on seven-for-ten shooting from thefloor. He also had three steals and three blocked shots on the night.
Frank Hassell added 15 points along with a game high 13 boards and four blocked shots. Ben Finney scored 13 points along with four rebounds and two assists.Darius James led in assists with six.
With the score, 21-13 with 10:27 left in the first half, ODU outscored the Bulldogs,8-0 to take a 29-13 lead after Marquel De Lancey's two free throws. The lead reached 20 at 38-18 with 4:17 left after a Ben Finney trey.
In all, the Monarchs largest lead was 32 at 8957 with 1:42 left in the game.
ODU outrebounded Barton, 55-29. In addition to Hassell's 13 boards, Marsharee Neelyhad seven, Keyon Carter six and Kent Bazemore five.
ODU's defense forced the Bulldogs into .306 (19-62) shooting from the field, whileODU hit.493 (34-69).
The Monarchs return to action Saturday night when they host Elizabeth City StateUniversity from the CIAA at 7 p.m. in their final exhibition contest.
