NORFOLK, Va. - Christina Mastropaolo scored three goals, including the final two of the game to push No. 12 Drexel past No. 16 Old Dominion, 3-2, in a battle between two of the top four Colonial Athletic Association field hockey teams Friday evening at the Powhatan Sports Complex.

The Lady Monarchs fall to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the CAA, while the Dragons improve to 10-2 on the year and 3-1 in league play.

The Lady Monarchs fell behind early as Mastropaolo scored off a rebound in the eighth minute. ODU would respond before the half though, converting on a penalty corner to tie the game at one. Junior Loran Hatch (Green Lane, Pa.) capped off a perfectly executed corner by blasting a shot past Drexel goalkeeper Jenna Phillips. Seniors Katie Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa.) and Alyschia Conn (Peach Bottom, Pa.) assisted on the Hatch goal.

Old Dominion would retain the momentum going into the second stanza of play, grabbing its first lead of the game in the 49th minute. Hatch received the penalty corner feed from Conn and placed a pass onto the stick of Ueberroth, who slid the ball behind the keeper to give the Lady Monarchs a 2-1 advantage.

The lead would not last for long though as Mastropaolo converted on two scores in less than six minutes. Mastropaolo's second goal of the game came off a pass from Susan Ciufo. She then tallied the game-winner after controlling a deflection off a crossing pass that went off ODU goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.). After settling the ball, Mastropaolo was able to score from point-blank range to give the Dragons a lead they would not give up.

Old Dominion outshot Drexel 16-10 and held the advantage in penalty corners, 9-5.

The Lady Monarchs will play another CAA home game on Sunday when they welcome Hofstra. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the Powhatan Sports Complex.
