BLACKSBURG, Va. -- ODU junior tennis player Nadine Fahoum (Haifa, Israel) won the 2009 ITA/Wilson Women's Atlantic Regional Singles Championship today and earned a trip to the National Indoor Championships next week at Yale University. Fahoum, after playing a grueling doubles match immediately prior, downed UVa's Erin Vierra in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

At 9:00 am this morning, Fahoum teamed with Joanna Dobrowolska in the doubles semifinal to face the top-seeded pair from UVA, Jenny Stevens and Hana Tomjanovic. The Lady Monarchs would defeat the Cavalier tandem in a long, tough battle, finishing with a score of 9-7.

Immediately following her doubles victory, Fahoum had to take the court in the singles championship matchup. The ODU junior did not tire, though, and defeated the sixth seeded Vierra in a tidy 6-2, 6-2 final. It is the first regional title for the Lady Monarchs since 2003 when current assistant coach Nataly Cahana-Fleishman won and advanced to the ITA Indoor National Championship.

Fahoum becomes just the second female tennis player to win a regional championship. She will advance to play at Yale University, host of the 2009 ITA National Indoor Championships from November 5-8.

Following her singles victory, Fahoum hit the court again for another championship match, this time in doubles. Her and her partner, Dobrowolska, played for an Old Dominion sweep at regionals, but the Lady Monarchs were defeated, 8-6 in the championship. Marshall's second seeded pair of Michaela Kissell and Dominka Zaprazna outlasted the Lady Monarchs fourth seeded tandem in the final and will advance to play at Yale.
