BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Lady Monarch junior Nadine Fahoum won two more matches on Saturday, advancing to the quarterfinals at the 2009 ITA Atlantic Regional. Fahoum won both matches in straight sets and will face VCU's Josefin Hjerquist in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Fahoum, ranked 116th in the nation, defeated Maryland's Lisa Miller in her first match Saturday morning, in the Round of 32, 6-4, 6-0. Then, in the Round of 16, Fahoum faced 9-16 seed Hana Tomjanovic from UVA and won the first set 6-1, before being stretched to a tiebreaker in the second, 7-6 (5).
On Sunday, Fahoum will face Hjerquist, who is coming off an upset over Virginia's Emily Fraser, ranked 54th in the nation. Hjerquist won 6-0, 7-6 (4) to advance to the quarterfinals.
The two will match up at 11:30 a.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center at Virginia Tech on Sunday and the winner will advance to play a semifinal match at 3:00 p.m.
ODU's Irina Dementyeva also played on Saturday, but dropped her first match of the day to 73rd ranked Jenny Stevens (UVA) by a final score of 6-2, 6-1. Joanna Dobrowolska played in one consolation match, defeating Marshall's Kara Kucin, 6-0, 6-3.
