Lady Monarchs Advance at ITA Atlantic Regional

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- ODU junior Nadine Fahoum and sophomore Irina Dementyeva both won their opening matches Friday at the 2009 ITA Atlantic Regional being held at Virginia Tech. Both Lady Monarchs finished off their opponents in straight sets and will play in the Round of 32 on Saturday.

Fahoum, nationally ranked 116th and the third seed at the Atlantic Regional, won a 6-2, 6-1 match over Richmond's Helen Cunningham. She will face Maryland's Lisa Miller at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday in the Round of 32 and the winner will play again at 1:30 against the winner of the Emily Lauten (VT) vs. (9-16) Hana Tomjanovic (UVA) match.

Dementyeva will have to face the number four seed and 73rd ranked Jenny Stevens at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow after defeating Pittsburgh's Elizabeth Adams, 6-3, 7-5. Kristina Koprcina (Marshall) will face (9-16) Martha Blakely (VT) in the other side of the bracket and will await the winner of the Dementyeva/Stevens match.

ODU's Joanna Dobrowolska was also in action at the Regional, tasked with facing the number one seed and 36th ranked Michaela Kissell from Marshall. Dobrowolska did take one game from the top seed, but fell 6-1, 6-0 in the Round of 64.

Fahoum will kick off play for ODU on Saturday with her match at 9:30 a.m. while Dementyeva will play at 12:30 p.m.
